Our Name "Girri Girri"
Lisa Crawford
The name Girri Girri was chosen for the new Sports Academy for Indigenous Students by a group of Aboriginal students on the Kelso Campus of Denison College of Secondary Education. In Wiradjuri language 'Girri Girri' means happy, joyful, cheerful and glad.
Following the approval of the Sports Academy for Indigenous Students, Lisa Crawford (the Aboriginal Regional Support Officer in the Western Region of the Department of Education) met with local Aboriginal students to select a name for the new venture.
The Kelso Campus students who met with Lisa had previously enrolled in a Wiradjuri Language Program offered for indigenous and non-indigenous students by Denison College of Secondary Education.
Local woman, Elaine Bugg, was the tutor for the Language Program. The textbook used in the course was the Wiradjuri Dictionary compiled by Stan Grant Snr and John Rudder.
